What makes a congregation? Is it bricks, mortar and aging walls each of which if they could talk, tell of the joys, the sorrows, differences, the pride of its members? Or is it the people from many places who enter searching for peace, learning, prayer, consolation, tradition and a sense of belonging?
Jews thrive within a community; it is the
vessel through which we communicate ideals and discover oneself and oneís
destiny.
A temple cannot exist without people and no matter how humble, there must be a
place for Torah, prayer and learning. Temple Beth Or has existed through one
hundred yearsÝ and fifty years of people and places to remain the oldest
Jewish congregation in Montgomery, Alabama.Ý
SISTERHOOD
Through the ongoing efforts of a vital and creative sisterhood, our group of WFJ manages the Temple's Judaica Shop, sponsors weekly Oneg Shabbats after Friday Night services, is a major fundraiser for Temple, oversees our Kitchen, and provides annual Break the Fast dinners, a Huntingdon College Night, and Passover Seder. Sisterhood also organizes and conducts and annual Sisterhood Shabbat Service, written and developed by members of our congregation.

L'CHAIM LEAGUE
L'Chaim League offers trips, lunches and seminars by visiting speakers are held regularly for senior members of our congregation. Adults of all ages are welcome.
YOUTH GROUP
Our Temple Youth Group (aka BOOTY) is part of NFTY-SAR. Small but active, they have host regional conventions and for the last eight years have had a Youth group member rise to regional office. It's the perfect training ground for future community involvement and a joyous glimpse into the future of Reform Judaism.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Our Board of Directors is comprised of long time members of the Montgomery Jewish Community and newcomers. It is a working board, with the responsibility of running the business side of Temple life. But our members donate vast amounts of time and energy manning kitchens, serving on Tzedakah projects, teaching in our religion school, rebooting computers or doing what ever needs to happen. Through their efforts we successfully completed our second Montgomery Jewish Food Festival bringing over almost 1,000 people from the river region into Temple Beth Or to taste the best Ashkenazic and Sephardic Specialties in Montgomery. The festival is held in early spring.
